Scott of the Antarctic: The Definitive Biography by David Crane

$14.00 NZD

Category: Antarctic | Reading Level: very good

David Crane has given us a magisterial portrait of one of Britain's greatest heroes and explorers, acclaimed as the 'masterpiece' on the subject. Reissued for the 100th anniversary of Scott's doomed expedition. 'It seems a pity, but I do not think I can write more! For God's sake look after our people.' These were the final words written in Scott's diary on 29 March 1912, as he lay dying of exhaustion, starvation and extreme cold, in his tent on his return journey from the South Pole. Since then he has been the subject of many books. Yet in all the pages that have been written about him, the personality behind the legend has been forgotten or distorted beyond all recognition. David Crane's magisterial biography redresses this completely. By reassessing Scott's life and his substantial scientific achievements, Crane is able to provide a fresh and exciting perspective on both the Discovery expedition of 1901-4 and the Terra Nova expedition of 1910-12. The courage and tragedy of Scott's last journey are only one part of the process, for the scientific enquiry that led up to it transformed the whole nature and ambition of Antarctic exploration. Written with the full support of Scott's surviving relatives, and with access to the voluminous diaries and records of key participants, this definitive biography sets out to reconcile the very private struggles of the man with the very public life of extremes that he led. ...Show more

1912: The Year the World Discovered Antarctica by Chris Turney

$16.00 NZD

Category: Antarctic | Reading Level: very good

“The South Pole discovered” trumpeted the front page of The Daily Chronicle on March 8, 1912, marking Roald Amundsen’s triumph over the tragic Robert Scott. Yet behind all the headlines there was a much bigger story. Antarctica was awash with expeditions. In 1912, five separate teams representing the ol d and new world were diligently embarking on scientific exploration beyond the edge of the known planet. Their discoveries not only enthralled the world, but changed our understanding of the planet forever. Tales of endurance, self-sacrifice, and technological innovation laid the foundations for modern scientific exploration, and inspired future generations. To celebrate the centenary of this groundbreaking work, 1912: The Year the World Discovered Antarctica revisits the exploits of these different expeditions. Looking beyond the personalities and drawing on his own polar experience, Chris Turney shows how their discoveries marked the dawn of a new age in our understanding of the natural world. He makes use of original and exclusive unpublished archival material and weaves in the latest scientific findings to show how we might reawaken the public’s passion for discovery and exploration ...Show more

On The Edge: Astonishing True Stories of Exploration, Survival and Endurance by Edited by John Keay

$10.00 NZD

Category: Antarctic | Series: Giant Book Ser. | Reading Level: good

On the Edge's liner notes end with the proclamation "Hail to the Power, Spirit, and Might of Heavy Metal!" Such an unabashedly earnest sentiment could only come from a band like Iron Fire (or Manowar, for that matter), who dutifully adhere to all of the most cherished tenets of '80s metal: sizzling dual guitar cadenzas, plenty of double bass drumming, and songs that address subjects like hell, the prince of darkness, judgment day and, of course, evil. The singer even sounds like Vince Neil. Iron Fire's total lack of innovation or forward thinking is nearly compensated for by the group's spirited and completely unselfconscious allegiance to the stylings of classic metal. And kudos to the band for including a harmonica and Hammond organ on "Wanted Man." ~ Andy Hinds ...Show more

Antarctic Odyssey - In The Footsteps Of The South Polar Explorers by Graham Collier

$25.00 NZD

Both a journey in the footsteps of others and an account of the author's own experiences with the spectacular wildlife: from Emperor penguins to skuas, which prey on their chicks, to leopard seals and the Orcas. Starting from the Magellan Straits, he moves on to South Georgia, Elephant Island, where the refugees from the Endurance sheltered ona strip of beach for months, and Peter 1 Island before venturing into the Weddell Sea from where the expeditions of Shackleton, Scott and Amundsen set forth. ...Show more

In the Ghost Country by Peter Hillary & John Elder

$15.00 NZD

Category: Antarctic | Reading Level: very good

In the Antarctic summer of 1998-99, Peter Hillary began a walk to the South Pole, across some of the most forbidding country on earth. Under the pressure of a bizarre and relentless media spotlight, his team broke apart and descended into madness. For Hillary, a veteran of major expeditions in the Himal ayas, the Andes, the Karakoram, the Arctic and the Antarctic, this was the loneliest trek of his life. The expedition became a hallucinogenic journey through a country populated by ghostly images: ghosts of friends who perished while Peter survived, and the ghost of Peter's still-living father, Sir Edmund Hillary, the last of the legends from the great age of exploration. In The Ghost Country, informed by a strong literary sensibility, is Hillary's story of that trek, as well as a joyful tribute to the craft of mountaineering, written by one of the most gifted climbers of his generation. ...Show more
