Artists' Pigments c1600-1835 - A Study in English Documentary Sources by R D Harley

$40.00 NZD

Category: History & Theory | Reading Level: very good

Between the late sixteenth century and early nineteenth centuries the artist's world underwent great and significant change. By the end of this period the transition from mediaeval to modern colours was well under way. R.D. Harley's book applies itself to a detailed and comprehensive examination of the primary documentary sources of this crucial period, providing an invaluable complement to the work of analytical scientists concerned with the identification of pigments. In the opening three chapters, attention is paid to the various documentary sources examined, from the learned treatise to the tradesman's guide, and in particular to the problem of their reliability. The information derived from these documents forms the basis of the nine subsequent chapters in which individual colours, grouped according to hue, are investigated. In conclusion, the author addresses the development of colour manufacture in this period of unprecedented industrial and social change in England. Great care is taken at all times to deal with the interpretation of colour names used at different times, and with dates of discovery and commercial availability of new pigments. The Archetype edition of this classic work is a reprint of the second edition with an additional article on new watercolours in the nineteenth century. Illustrated in black and white and colour, Artists' Pigments is a commendably thorough, detailed and comprehensive reference book of unique interest and usefulness to conservators, artists and art historians alike. ...Show more

Rock My Religion - Writings and Projects 1965-1990 by Dan Graham; Brian Wallis (Editor)

$20.00 NZD

Category: History & Theory | Series: Writing Art Ser. | Reading Level: good

Rock My Religion collects eighteen of Graham's essays from all periods of his work, beginning with his essays on minimalist artists such as Dan Flavin and Donald Judd, continuing with his writings on punk rock and popular culture, and concluding with his more recent considerations of architecture, urban space, and power.Dan Graham's artworks and critical writings have had an enormous influence on the course of contemporary art over the past quarter century. Rock My Religion collects eighteen of Graham's essays from all periods of his work, beginning with his essays on minimalist artists such as Dan Flavin and Donald Judd, continuing with his writings on punk rock and popular culture, and concluding with his more recent considerations of architecture, urban space, and power.Alternating with these theoretical essays are descriptions and documentations of Graham's own works and installations--projects that trace his explorations in conceptual art, video, photography, architecture, and public sculpture, showing the integral connections between Graham's criticism and his own artwork. Although as an artist Graham has been associated with minimalism, conceptual art, and postmodernism, his writing does not conform to the stylistic and theoretical constraints of any specific movement. With sources and topics ranging from Ronald Reagan to the Sex Pistols, from Michel Foucault to Dean Martin, Graham's eclectic investigations into the complex cultural relationships between art production and social reality are always strikingly original. What makes these writings particularly astonishing, though, is Graham's willingness to examine specific manifestations of popular culture (television, magazines, rock and roll, drugs) without regard to traditional qualitative judgments and without separating high or low culture from the processes of everyday life. ...Show more

Nothing If Not Critical - Selected Essays on Art and Artists by Robert Hughes

$25.00 NZD

Category: History & Theory | Reading Level: very good

From Holbein to Hockney, from Norman Rockwell to Pablo Picasso, from sixteenth-century Rome to 1980s SoHo, Robert Hughes looks with love, loathing, warmth, wit and authority at a wide range of art and artists, good, bad, past and present. As art critic for Time magazine, internationally acclaimed for hi s study of modern art, The Shock of the New, he is perhaps America's most widely read and admired writer on art. In this book: nearly a hundred of his finest essays on the subject. For the realism of Thomas Eakins to the Soviet satirists Komar and Melamid, from Watteau to Willem de Kooning to Susan Rothenberg, here is Hughes--astute, vivid and uninhibited--on dozens of famous and not-so-famous artists. He observes that Caravaggio was "one of the hinges of art history; there was art before him and art after him, and they were not the same"; he remarks that Julian Schnabel's "work is to painting what Stallone's is to acting"; he calls John Constable's Wivenhoe Park "almost the last word on Eden-as-Property"; he notes how "distorted traces of Jackson] Pollock lie like genes in art-world careers that, one might have thought, had nothing to do with his." He knows how Norman Rockwell made a chicken stand still long enough to be painted, and what Degas said about success (some kinds are indistinguishable from panic). Phrasemaker par excellence, Hughes is at the same time an incisive and profound critic, not only of particular artists, but also of the social context in which art exists and is traded. His fresh perceptions of such figures as Andy Warhol and the French writer Jean Baudrillard are matched in brilliance by his pungent discussions of the art market--its inflated prices and reputations, its damage to the public domain of culture. There is a superb essay on Bernard Berenson, and another on the strange, tangled case of the Mark Rothko estate. And as a finale, Hughes gives us "The SoHoiad," the mock-epic satire that so amused and annoyed the art world in the mid-1980s. A meteor of a book that enlightens, startles, stimulates and entertains. ...Show more

Painting and Experience in Fifteenth-Century Italy: A Primer in the Social History of Pictorial Style by Michael Baxandall

$12.00 NZD

Category: History & Theory | Series: Oxford Paperbacks | Reading Level: very good

Serving as both an introduction to fifteenth-century Italian painting and as a text on how to interpret social history from the style of pictures in a given historical period, this new edition to Baxandall's pre-eminent scholarly volume examines early Renaissance painting, and explains how the style of painting in any society reflects the visual skills and habits that evolve out of daily life. Renaissance painting, for example, mirrors the experience of such activities as preaching, dancing, and gauging barrels. The volume includes discussions of a wide variety of painters, including Filippo Lippi, Fra Angelico, Stefano di Giovanni, Sandro Botticelli, Masaccio, Luca Signorelli, Boccaccio, and countless others. Baxandall also defines and illustrates sixteen concepts used by a contemporary critic of painting, thereby assembling the basic equipment needed to explore fifteenth-century art. This new second edition includes an appendix that lists the original Latin and Italian texts referred to throughout the book, providing the reader with all the relevant, authentic sources. It also contains an updated bibliography and a new reproduction of a recently restored painting which replaces the original. ...Show more
