American Paintings of the Nineteenth Century - Part II
Author(s): Robert Wilson Torchia; Deborah Chotner; Ellen G. Miles
In this second of two volumes devoted to the Gallery's holdings of nineteenth-century American paintings, more than 100 works are catalogued. Distinguished in part by the concentration of works by three prominent artists, Thomas Sully, John Singer Sargent, and James McNeill Whistler, the collection also includes John Quidor's The Return of Rip van Winkle, Albert Pinkham Ryder's Siegfried and the Rhine Maidens, John Henry Twachtman's Winter Harmony, and Rembrandt Peale's best-known work, Rubens Peale with a Geranium. Many of these paintings are reproduced in full color for the first time.
