Mana Whakatipu - Ngāi Tahu Leader Mark Solomon on Leadership and Life by Mark Solomon; Mark Revington

$15.00 NZD

Category: Maori | Reading Level: near fine

In 1998, just as South Island iwi Ngāi Tahu was about to sign its Treaty of Waitangi settlement with the government — justice of sorts after seven generations of seeking redress — a former foundryman stepped into the pivotal role of kaiwhakahaere or chair of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, the tribal council of Ngāi Tahu, Mark Solomon stood at the head of his iwi at a pivotal moment and can be credited with the astute stewardship of the settlement that has today made Ngāi Tahu a major player in the economy and given it long sought-after self determination for the affairs of its own people. Bold, energetic and visionary, for 18 years Solomon forged a courageous and determined course, bringing a uniquely Māori approach to a range of issues. Now, in this direct memoir, Tā Mark reflects on his life, on the people who influenced him, on what it means to lead, and on the future for both Ngāi Tahu and Aotearoa New Zealand. ...Show more

Te Puea - A Life by Michael King

$20.00 NZD

Category: Maori | Reading Level: good-very good

'When my life is written, I want the truth and nothing but the truth to be told' (Te Puea Herangi). This book fills a gap in New Zealand's history, documenting the dramatic events surrounding the nearest thing in New Zealand to a nationalist organisation: The Maori King Movement, and, more specifically, its leading Maori proponent Te Puea Herangi (1883? 1952). Highlights of her story include the movement's struggle to win recognition from successive governments, their pacifist stance during World War One, the catastrophic effects of the Influenza Epidemic, the battle to win Maori land unjustly confiscated, her alliance with Sir Apirana Ngata, and her charged opposition to the prophet T.W. Ratana. More than any other leader, Te Puea succeeded in strengthening Maori values through building relationships between major figures. First printed in 1977, Te Puea was reprinted twice in 1978, issued in a new edition in 1982 (reprinted 1984), a third edition in 1987 (reprinted in 1990 and 1993), and after ten years returns in this redesigned fourth edition. The Author: Michael King, noted New Zealand historian and writer by profession, is the author of this and many other landmark works including Moko, Te Ao Hurihuri and Tihei Mauri Ora. The late Maori scholar Dr Pei Te Hurihuri Jones remarked that King's work displays a fine touch and understanding of things Maori. Trade Paperback ...Show more
