A grandfather explains to his young grandson why he has portrait of a dog hanging on his wall. When he was a young farm boy, he discovered a stray dog and wanted to keep him for a pet. His father would have only working dogs on the farm and refused to allow the boy to keep the dog. The boy thinks his father has shot it and is heartbroken.
Some time later the boy becomes lost in the bush and is in trouble when the sun goes down and the temperature drops. Out of nowhere the dog appears and stays with the boy, keeping him warm, until searchers find them in the morning. The dog then disappears, never to be seen again. Based on a true story, this stunningly illustrated, poignant tale.
