Why Go To The Riviera - Images of Wellington

Author(s): Peter Shaw

New Zealand | Regional

Shortlisted for the 2004 NZ Montana Book Awards, Illustrative section. This high-quality art book illustrates 100 paintings, prints and photographs by well-known and highly ranked New Zealand artists. The images have been chosen primarily because they provide a distinctive record of first-rate art works recording the landscape in Wellington city. The images will provide local readers with a shock of recognition and other readers with a valuable record of a place they have visited. Images range from early historic images to contemporary ones and include some more abstract treatments based on the landscape while not actually illustrating them. The historic images have been chosen for the way in which they cast light on much changed contemporary places. Accompanied by an introductory text of 2500 words, and each image is interestingly captioned in such a way as to draw attention to the significance of the image. Peter Shaw, graduate of University of Canterbury, was a secondary school teacher for 11 years. From 1983 to 1991 he was a full-time arts writer contributing articles on architectural history, music and theatre, and the fine arts to Art New Zealand, Music in New Zealand, House and Building and Architecture New Zealand. In 1981 he wrote the first Lively Arts column in Metro, continuing in this role until 1996. He is the author of Art Deco Napier: Styles Of The Thirties (1987., 4th edition 1998) and A Hostory Of NZ Architecture (1991., 2nd edition 1997) among others. Peter is currently a lecturer with the Faculty of Architecture and Design at UNITEC, Auckland, and the curator for the Fletcher Trust Art Collection, the DB Group and the Kelliher Trust Art Collection.
