Artist Lee Bontecou (b 1931) became known in the 1960s and 1970s for her welded steel sculptures and plastic and epoxy molded assemblages - constructions that evoked natural phenomena and organic biological life as well as machines and instruments of war. This book reevaluates her career and focuses upon the impact of her early work.

Robert Storr is dean of the Yale University School of Art and Consulting Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He is the author of numerous books, including Alex Katz Paints Ada (Yale). Donna De Salvo is chief curator and associate director of programmes at the Whitney Museum of American Art and coeditor of the forthcoming Lawrence Weiner (published by Yale University Press). Mona Hadler is an art historian.
